DETAILS

In 2012, Superstorm Sandy ravaged the New Jersey coast and devastated dozens of communities and the lives of thousands of residents. And in the months following the storm, our disaster recovery system failed the most impacted communities of color, disproportionately allocating resources to white and wealthier homeowners. But a historic settlement — the largest in the history of the federal Fair Housing Act — reached between Fair Share Housing Center, the Latino Action Network, and the New Jersey State Conference of the NAACP and the State of New Jersey — reallocated over a half-billion dollars of that funding, placing critical resources in the hands of low-income renters of color and giving them the opportunity to begin to rebuild their lives. This spring, we celebrate the 10 year anniversary of that historic moment with an evening convening that will bring together the original groups that brought the lawsuit as well as storm survivors to reflect on the importance of that action, the progress we have made since, and the need for additional civil rights advocacy in the disaster recovery system. Attendees will enjoy a brief reception before hearing from our panelists for a moderated conversation that addresses and commemorates where we've been and what challenges we still face in ensuring an equitable recovery from disasters for all.
